For years you have been meaning to the Black Hills. Ever since you were
a kid, and you read about Jesse James or the wild buffalo, you could imagine
the vastness of the Badlands, and what it might have been like to be here
long ago. Yes, a South Dakota vacation is just what you need. A fun educational
vacation in Hot Springs. But first... Imagine a crowded, bare bones feed
lot packed with captured mustangs, some too weak to stand. Listless, dejected,
some have lost the will to live. With their spirits broken, unwanted, either
too old, too ugly, or too independent that they did not qualify for the
adoption program. But, then imagine an Oregon rancher, naturalist, and
author, with the heart, will, sense of duty, and desire to save these animals,
and you have Dayton O. Hyde. In 1988, Dayton Hyde, by the skin of his teeth,
raised enough money for a down payment on a sanctuary near Hot Springs,
South Dakota, and convinced the Bureau of Land Management to send him its
un-adoptable wild horses.
